You Need Way More Than Love

“It is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment” (Philippians 1:9).

Remember that old Beatles song, “All You Need Is Love?”

There’s nothing you can do that can’t be done

Nothing you can sing that can’t be sung

Nothing you can say, but you can learn how to play the game

It’s easy

Nothing you can make that can’t be made

No one you can save that can’t be saved

Nothing you can do, but you can learn how to be you in time

It’s easy

All you need is love

All you need is love

All you need is love, lo

Now that that song is stuck in your head you may want to unstick it for a simple reason. All you need is love? No. That’s not true. You need more than love. You need a lot more.

According to the apostle Paul, we need knowledge and discernment to go along with our love. Without knowledge and discernment, how will we know if we are loving the right things, or the right people? Without knowledge and discernment, how will we know how to love as well as what to love? Love, by itself, can only do so much. In fact, our salvation in Christ is not based on love alone, but with God’s full knowledge of who and what we are. And he expects us to exercise love in wisdom.

Memory Verse

“It is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ” (Philippians 1:9-10).

Application

Look for opportunities to love others today, but also apply wisdom to your expression of love.
